There's a lot of reasons, of course they killed him, Al Qaeda issued statements admitting his dead, people need to break out of the mentality that Osama was some poor Arab dude hiding in caves, he was a multi-millionaire who had the support of most Pakistanis and Afghans despite what the media tried to portray. The threw his body in the sea and released no images because it would be used as propaganda against the United States but an insult is killing him and dumping his body in an unmarked locatoin. They did the same with abu musab al-zarqawi in iraq, the only difference is they released photos (which were later used as propaganda by the iraqi mujahideen) but they buried him in an unmarked grave somewhere in iraq.

It's not uncommon what they did but because its the most wanted man people feel the need to make conspiracies behind it.
