Reach, as metioned in the HALO series, was the last stronghold bewteen the Covanant and Earth. A fierce fight was fought, but the Covanant won crippling a major blow to the Spartan program. It was rumored only one Spartan, 117, (also known as John in the book) survived.

And dont worry, some people never even heard of an xbox or ps3.
