The bigger problem was not the birth certificate, it was the fact that there was no due diligence performed on Barack Obama while he was running for presidency. No one questioned his voting record (most of his senate votes he voted "present" rather than picking a side), his past experience, the people he looked to for advice (Bill Ayers of the weather underground). He rarely took tough questions, and when he did, he often offered radical responses.

The birther thing was just one component that no one really challenged, it was brushed aside just like his college records (that every other candidate releases and Bush was made so much fun of for because he got some bad grades or something), and continued to get brushed aside until Joe Arpaio and Donald Trump wouldn't lay off of him for it.

What about when Romney had criminal allegations made about him for what he did when he exited Bain capital or that he "paid no taxes" as Harry Reid said (which was not true). Flip the table and swap Romney's name with Obama's... what would folks say... "oh well your just saying that cause your a dumb fucking racist".
