when assault weapons started hitting teh streets a few decades ago why did police get assault weapons? were the shot guns and pistols not doing a good enough job against assault weapons?

i live in canada, we have strict gun laws here compared to the usa.....and although there are still shootings, there are not near as many as they have in the states.....america is a broken society, and its gonna take alot more than gun laws to fix it
