Not that I agree with him on a Titanic event. But That event created SOLAS and eventually GMDSS which save lives everyday. Also the Polar icebreakers and USCG Polar observation flights to locate and track Icebergs

Interesting thing about the Titanic trip... my great aunt Nancy was on it. She was a nanny for a rich American family and as such was one of the first off (being a woman and in first class).

The first boats that were off were picked up by a passing ship and taken to New York (before they thought it would sink... more of a precautionary measure. Fuck knows why they didn't stay to pick up other passengers... another in the list of cock ups that night.

Anyway... her and the other people picked up so early didn't even know the boat had sank until they read it in the New York Times the next day. Madness!

there were some good things that came out of the Titanic sinking though. According to the news at the time, the last survivor was fond of saying: 'If it hadn't been for the ship going down, I'd be an American'.
