The **Talk nerdy to me** Thread
Okay so i need nerdy and geek support... i am trying to look at buying a new lappy and don't understand what aspects make a computer run fast... i looked on google... and i got seriously confused by what it all meant... so first up can someone tell me what these things are and what they do...
CPU
CPU speed
L2 Cache capacity
Front side bus
Hard disk drive
Memory (i always thought this was a hard disk drive D:)
Bridge media adaptor
and what of the above relate to RAM, PROCESSOR and what makes it fast D:

wormdogg10Holy shit this is like almost greek nowadays! As far as speed I dont know what will help you in NZ to make PB go faster for you if thats what your looking for. But you may want to talk to where you are trying to buy the laptop from to see if it will do what your looking for. But if other US sites arent as slow for you then it isnt your computer
Deadhead86CPU = central processing unit... your microprocessor.
CPU speed = how fast the microprocessor can perform actions. this is gauged by gigahertz
L2 Cache Capacity = this is the amount of "space" your computer uses so that it can easily "grab" data rather than pulling it directly from the memory
Font side Bus = This is the part of your pc that connects the CPU to the memory (i think)
Hard Disk Drive = This is where you store your data
Memory = this is the RAM
Bride Media Adaptor = no idea :P

My computer is a lappy that is kind of old now and i wanna update it and want a faster one but i don't know what makes it faster... nothing i can do about net speed... the government is working on that... D: but aren't all governments working on something...

Okay so am i right in thinking that cpu speed is the bit that helps most with the speed of processing tasks? so is that what makes it fast or is it more than just on feature?

Deadhead86you want a good microprocessor.. like a quadcore
also ram will make your computer faster too.
i'm no genius on this but my brother is. I'll ask him for you.

JoeInBe...Hana, it all depends on what you need the computer for. If you're just going to do basic browsing and playing this game, then you don't require much. If you're going to be playing a lot of computer games like Call of Duty or Battlefield or FIFA12 or something, you're going to need something different. But, the most important things to look for when shopping a computer:
Processor type and speed. "The higher, the better" isn't always true. I would rather have an Intel Core 2.4GHz dual-processor than an AMD 2.6GHz one... Ask the salesperson for the most reliable processor type. And don't get anything less than 2GHz if you're going for a new lappy.
RAM (Memory). Anything 2GB and more, and you'll be fine. At minimum, make sure the laptop has DDR2 memory. DDR3 memory? Even better. DDR memory? Outdated technology.
Hard Disk Drive: Honestly, doesn't matter that much... Actually, larger drives in laptops tend to zonk out faster than the smaller ones. Anything over 200GB is good, so don't let them raise the prices on you solely based on hard drive space... You can always get an external hard drive later if you need more space.
L2 Cache Capacity & Front Side Bus: Irrelevant. Just some random facts that computer companies rant about their processors and motherboards to make you feel like a retard.
Bridge Media Adaptor: Irrelevant, unless you use your digital camera a lot. or connect to an external monitor. Otherwise, don't worry about it.
And a big one for me... The graphics/video card... To most people, this doesn't matter, but this is actually very important. The standard video card is the Intel HD Accelerated Blah Fucking Blah Graphics Card... Don't fall for that fancy name. Get a computer with a good video card. Nowadays, every website uses processor intensive flash (i fucking hate flash) and/or HTML5. If you have a shitty video card, you'll notice a ton of lag (including on PB) while all the graphics/video/flash have to load. A good graphics card will pretty much allow any content to be displayed without having to load it into the memory's cache first... This is a big one that everyone always overlooks, but very important. For regular browsing, I'd recommend getting an ATI video card, at the least, with a minimum of 256MB of memory.
Light-up keyboards are VERY convenient, by the way... Oh, and make sure to get an extra battery pack when you buy your computer, cuz that's when they'll give you the best deals on 'em.
That's it.

Death_H...It all depends what you want to do with your computer... no point buying a CFD capable machine when you are only going to do browsing and word processing.
What do you want it for?
I build all my own comps
Have a water cooled 8gig full tower with 4 1gig drives running in RAID
OMG... thanks Joe... kinda sexy when you talk like that... and i don't do any other gaming other than pb... when would i have time
and i use it for work a bit ... i just use it for work and for accessing the internet and for pb... oh and watching movies... imma compare what i got now to what you say
