personally, I don't like em... I was going to add it to the first post only so help when people wanted to vote for an idea in the suggestions section, but like someone else said, it also works for those who want to "like" something without making a whole post saying "i agree" or whatever.

I think it does post to your wall saying "XYZ Liked a link" and posts a link to the post
