Originally posted by hanako so to question the actual exsistence is dangerous... rather challenge the parents who want an easy out to what is going on with their kids... but don't rule out the fact it exsists... otherwise you maginalise a whole sector of society who are already have challenges in their world... don't need more stigma, judgement or discrimination.

hana..if their unscrupulous enough to use their kids as pawns to play the system,i doubt you could challenge them..i would say arrest them and throw them in jail for fraud..but then that would just move the kids into a different "social caring" program..maybe hold the doctors responsible for their diagnosis..but like welfare, workmens comp or any other program..theirs always gonna be a way for some to abuse.

The reason you didn't see it 40-50 years ago is because the medical world didn't widely recognize it as a disorder. It was recognized, but there were no official tests for it.

But I'm on the fence about whether it's a real illness, or whether it's somebody having trouble that they could eventually get over with the right amount of help. Or, maybe they just have a unique personality, and the rest of the world needs to get over it.

Either way, I'm especially skeptical about its existence, after one of the ADHD figureheads admitted that “ADHD is a prime example of a fictitious disease”.

But to get back to peggs question..does it exist??..of course it does......is it as big and prevalent a condition as it is now diagnosed....i don't think so.

i'm reasonably certain it exists.

But i think some children can't handle white sugar or caffeine very well and this leads to behavior that looks rather adhd.

some parents, and i know some personally with whom i am disgusted, can't handle what is essentially normal, but naughty, behavior and run for a doctor's diagnosis and pills.

that there are other kinds of fraud, misdiagnosis etcetera i don't doubt.

The worst of what I see is children who have ADHD ... Are prescribed medication and their parents take it and sell it that is horrible ... Then social services remove their children temporarily then can't find placements for them so return them to the same parents but don't allow the children medication... So the child continues to grow in an unsupportive environment with out any external to family support that they would have had... So sad and frustrating and then the children grow up and become young people and society marginalises them for behaviour they learnt from the adults in their lives sometimes I just hate humans so much... Wish I was a penguin

I'm on the fence as well, my psychology teacher believes it's not really a disease, it's more like everyone is different. Kinda like some people can build muscle faster and other people can learn more and study less. It makes sense to me

Edit: I apologize if any one else mentioned anything similar because I didn't read it.
