that kid that shot up his mom and school got the guns from his own house because his mom owned them. If they werent so easily availble to him, would he have went out and been able to buy them off black market? How much would these guns cost, would he even have had the cash to buy them legally alone?

Would the thought even have crossed his mind if the guns werent sitting there at his disposal?

I say assault weapons should be banned.

His mom (and every gun owner) has the responsibility to keep their weapons safe from those who should not have them (alcoholics, drug addicts, mentally ill). His mom failed. she knew he was messed up in the head, yet she didn't safeguard her weapons. Her failure should not mean the rest of us can't own a semi-auto rifle. I keep my guns locked up in a safe. You also can't put the genie back in the bottle so to speak. You can't just ban guns, and expect lawful citizens to hand theirs over, while the criminals keep theirs.

The issue here is so much deeper than semi-auto rifles. Long guns/Rifles have been used in only 3.5% of the murders in the US. The issue is that kids these days are desensitized to death. They spend hours in their basement playing call of duty, which also has voice capabilities, so not only are they killing non NPC's, they are killing something with a real voice, desensitizing them further. The mental health system also sucks. Lets not forget, Timothy McVeigh (may he rot in hell) did not use ONE gun...
