even without that definition, it's the word most used in hate crimes against gay people. it is to them what the n word is to black people, so of course it's offensive.

or take it another way, the word faggot is used to try and insult any man, gay or straight. since there's already a bias from most people against gays and lesbians, it is an easy way to insult them. anything you call someone that's almost guaranteed to make them react in an aggressive or hostile manner can't really be ok, can it?
